Why is it important?

Documenting a process or event is essential because it captures the often unseen, complex journey behind a finished work, idea or event. Through short insight or documentary films, audiences gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the artistic process, gain knowledge and learn more about a specific course or event, while artists preserve their ideas, decisions, and collaborations. This documentation also supports education, promotion, funding, and archival purposes, allowing the work to reach broader audiences and ensuring its legacy. A well-crafted insight film or documentary elevates the value of the process, not just the product, and creates a more informed and insightful view of an event.

How can this type of content be filmed?

To film research and creation process’ and events, I would attend one or more days to capture and gain an overall understanding of the work, event or show day. My approach would be to act as a fly on the wall—present in the space but unobtrusive—capturing the natural flow of rehearsals, discussions, and day-to-day activities without disrupting the creative process. Alongside this observational footage, I would conduct interviews with key members of the team which allows for personal insights and context. This would then be edited all together, the interviews forming a narrative with b-roll supporting this. If there is a final performance or showing of the work, I can also film this and incorporate it into the documentary to highlight the full progression—from initial ideas to final realisation.
